SEACOEM 2024 Pre-Conference Program – Thursday, October 17, 2024

Duke Lemur Center: Occupational Medicine Issues at a Specialty Animal Care Facility

In the morning, join us for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit and go behind the scenes at the Duke Lemur Center. The center houses the world’s most diverse population of lemurs outside their native Madagascar and is devoted to “non-invasive research, community-based conservation, and public outreach and education”. During the visit, participants will hear from Dr. Kristen Said about the occupational medicine challenges faced by the center staff, including dealing with infectious diseases.

Worksite Visit - Tour of Kymera/SCM

In the afternoon, we will visit Kymera International, a metallurgy company that produces a wide array of materials including aluminum and aluminum alloys, copper and copper alloys, copper oxide, titanium, vanadium, niobium and molybdenum master alloys, plain bearing alloys, silver coated, tin, zinc, coatings, and various specialty alloys. During the visit participants will learn about the health and safety issues related to modern materials manufacturing.
All required PPE will be provided onsite (dust mask, safety glasses, ear plugs, fire-resistant jacket, steel toe slip-ons).

Space is limited for the pre-conference program. Sign up early to avoid disappointment.
